Starbucks UK does not publish a general customer service telephone number. The route the company actually points customers to is a web form at customercare.starbucks.co.uk, backed up by @StarbucksUK on X and Facebook. The number circulating on complaint-aggregator sites, +44 (0) 20 3047 2656, is the EMEA press office line listed on the official contact page. Ringing it about a cold latte will get you nowhere.
For most problems the fastest fix is not head office at all. A wrong or badly made drink is remade on the spot by the store, usually without argument. Escalate to the web form only when the store cannot or will not resolve it, or when the issue involves money, an app account or a gift card. This page covers every route, what each one is actually good for, how long replies typically take, your rights under UK law, and why order accuracy and wait times slip in the first place.
Every Starbucks UK contact route, compared
Response times below are typical based on how these channels behave, not a published service-level commitment. Starbucks UK does not advertise a guaranteed reply window.
| Route | Where | Best for | Typical response |
|---|---|---|---|
| In store | Any Starbucks counter | Wrong, cold or badly made drink; missing item; immediate remake or refund | Immediate |
| Customer care form | customercare.starbucks.co.uk | Anything the store cannot fix; refunds, complaints, feedback, app faults | Two to five working days |
| Starbucks UK app | Help section inside the app | Mobile order failures, payment errors, Stars not credited, card top-ups | One to five working days |
| X (Twitter) | @StarbucksUK | Getting a stalled case moved; public visibility | Same day on weekdays |
| @StarbucksUK | Longer complaints with photos; message threads | One to three days | |
| Store manager | Ask at the counter or leave contact details | Repeated problems at one branch; hygiene or staff conduct | Same day to a few days |

| Franchise enquiries | [email protected] | Licensing and store partnership questions only | Not a customer route |

Start in the store: the remake policy is broader than people assume
Baristas in the UK have standing discretion to remake a drink a customer is unhappy with. You do not need a receipt, you do not need to have taken only one sip, and you do not need to prove the drink was made wrong. The practical threshold is simply saying, politely, that it is not right.
What triggers a remake without discussion:
- Wrong drink, wrong size, wrong milk or wrong syrup against what was ordered.
- Drink served noticeably below temperature, or a cold drink served without ice when ice was ordered.
- Milk that is scalded, split or the wrong type where an allergy or intolerance was flagged.
- Food served cold when it should have been heated, or heated when it should not.
- A spillage, whether or not the customer caused it.
- An item missing from the order that was paid for.
A cash or card refund rather than a remake is normally available if you ask for it, but is more likely to involve a supervisor and, for card payments, the original card. If you paid with Stars, the store can usually reinstate them, though that sometimes has to go through the customer care form instead.
What your legal rights actually are in a UK coffee shop
Buying a coffee is a mixed contract: the drink is goods, the making and serving of it is a service. Both sides of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 apply.
- Goods must be of satisfactory quality and match their description. A drink that is not what you ordered fails on description.
- Services must be performed with reasonable care and skill. A repeatedly wrong or unsafe preparation fails this.
- The service remedies are repeat performance or price reduction. In a café, repeat performance is the remake and price reduction is the refund.
- Allergen information must be accurate. UK food law requires the fourteen major allergens to be declared, and Natasha’s Law rules apply to food prepacked for direct sale.
If a store refuses both a remake and a refund for an item that was objectively wrong, that is the point at which the customer care form becomes worth using, and the point at which Trading Standards, reached through the Citizens Advice consumer service, becomes a genuine option.
How to write a complaint that actually gets resolved

The customer care form is triaged. Vague submissions get a templated apology; specific ones get a named case handler and, usually, compensation.
- Give the store name and full address. There are multiple Starbucks branches in most UK city centres and the wrong one wastes a cycle.
- Give the exact date and time. This lets the team pull the till record and, where relevant, the mobile order.
- Give the order or transaction reference. It is on the app order history, the emailed receipt or the printed receipt.
- Describe what happened in one paragraph, factually. No adjectives, no history of your loyalty to the brand.
- Attach a photo where the problem is visible: the wrong drink, the state of the food, the receipt.
- State the outcome you want. Refund, Stars reinstated, or simply that the branch is retrained. Asking for something specific gets a specific answer.
- Keep the case reference. Every reply is threaded to it and you will need it if you escalate.
App, mobile order and payment problems
The single largest category of complaint is not the coffee. It is the app.
Money taken but no order placed
This normally means an authorisation hold rather than a completed payment, and it usually falls away within three to five working days without any action. If it settles rather than dropping off, the store cannot reverse it; the customer care form or your bank’s chargeback process can.
Mobile order not ready or not received
Orders are sent to a specific store. If you selected the wrong branch, the drink is genuinely sitting on a counter somewhere else and the store you are standing in cannot see it. Staff will normally remake it as a goodwill gesture once, but you should raise it through the app so the charge is dealt with properly.
Stars not credited
Stars can take up to 24 hours to appear. If they have not landed after that, submit the receipt through the app help section. Scanning the app after payment has been taken does not retrospectively earn Stars in most cases, so scan first.
Card top-up failed but balance not increased
Treat this as a payment dispute, not a coffee complaint. Use the customer care form with the transaction reference. The mechanics are similar to any stored-value product; our explainer on prepaid cards and e-money in the UK covers why stored balances are handled differently from bank money.

Gift cards and Starbucks Card balances
A physical Starbucks Card and the digital card inside the app are the same product. Register it as soon as you receive it: an unregistered card that is lost is effectively cash and cannot be replaced, whereas a registered card can have its balance transferred to a new one.
- Balances can be checked online through the Starbucks card portal or in the app.
- Cards cannot be exchanged for cash and balances are not transferable between accounts.
- You can pay part of a bill with a card balance and the rest by another method.
- Licensed stores in travel and retail locations do not always accept Starbucks Cards or the app. Check before you queue.
Starbucks Rewards: the numbers that matter
These are the current UK programme mechanics, taken from the Starbucks UK rewards pages and terms.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Earn rate | 10 Stars for every £1 spent, however you pay |
| First redemption tier | 130 Stars: filter coffee, hot tea or a signature americano |
| Higher tiers | 300, 500 and 1,000 Stars for progressively larger items |
| Gold level | Reached at 2,500 Stars, adding free extras such as espresso shots, selected syrups and whipped cream, plus a birthday drink |
| Star expiry | Each Star expires two years from the date it was awarded |
| Account inactivity | An account inactive for two consecutive years is treated as unregistered and accrued Stars are void |
| Transfers | Stars cannot be sold, transferred, assigned or shared |
| Accounts per person | One personal account only |
The two-year individual Star expiry is the rule that catches people out. Stars do not expire as a block on your anniversary; they drop off one batch at a time, so a balance can shrink without you spending anything.
Not every UK Starbucks is run by Starbucks
This determines who has to fix your problem, and almost nobody explains it. Starbucks operates its own stores directly, but a large number of UK locations run under licence: motorway services, airports, railway stations, university campuses, hospitals and some supermarkets are typically operated by third-party catering companies using the Starbucks brand.
In a licensed store, the staff are not Starbucks employees, prices are set by the operator and often higher, the app and Starbucks Cards may not be accepted, and a complaint sent to Starbucks customer care will usually be forwarded to the operator rather than resolved directly. If you are complaining about a store at a service station or an airport, name the location precisely so it reaches the right company first time.

Starbucks did reduce this fragmentation at the retail end: in October 2024 it acquired 23.5 Degrees, its largest and first UK franchise partner, bringing several hundred previously franchised high-street stores back under direct operation.
Why order accuracy and wait times slip
For business readers, the interesting question is not whether Starbucks service is good but why it degrades in a predictable pattern. Four structural pressures explain most of it.
Mobile order queues compete with the physical queue
Mobile orders arrive on the same bar as walk-in orders but with no visible queue. From the barista’s position both streams are equally urgent; from the customer’s position, the person in front of them appears to be jumping ahead. Perceived wait time rises even when actual throughput is unchanged.
Menu complexity multiplies faster than staffing
Every new syrup, milk alternative, cold foam and seasonal drink multiplies the number of possible orders. A bar built for a handful of espresso drinks is now producing hundreds of permutations, several of which require blenders or cold-foam equipment that block the line.
Cold drinks take longer than hot ones
Blended and iced builds involve more steps, more equipment cleaning and more waste than a latte. As the UK mix has shifted towards cold drinks, average build time has risen even where order volume has not.
Peak demand is extremely narrow
A commuter-site UK store can take a substantial share of its daily transactions inside a 90-minute morning window. Rota decisions made on daily averages will always understaff that window, and that is where accuracy failures concentrate.
These are the same trade-offs any service business faces when it adds channels faster than capacity. Mapping them properly is what a customer journey map is for.
Tipping, service charges and what you are not obliged to pay
Starbucks UK card readers frequently prompt for a tip. This is entirely optional and declining it has no effect on your order. Since the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 came into force, tips must be passed on to workers in full and employers must have a written tipping policy available to staff. Cafés do not normally levy a service charge, but if one appears on a bill, our guide to the discretionary service charge in the UK explains when you can refuse it.
Escalation, in order
- Ask the barista for a remake or refund. Most cases end here within two minutes.
- Ask for the shift supervisor or store manager if the counter declines. Get a name.
- Submit the customer care form with store, date, time, transaction reference and photo. Keep the case number.
- Reply to the case if the response is templated, restating the specific outcome you asked for.
- Message @StarbucksUK with the case number if nothing moves within a week.
- Go to your bank for a chargeback where money was taken and not refunded, normally within 120 days of the transaction.
- Contact the Citizens Advice consumer service, which refers matters to Trading Standards, for food safety, allergen or hygiene issues.
- Report to the local council environmental health team directly if the issue is hygiene or an allergen incident at a specific branch.
Mistakes that slow your complaint down
- Ringing the press number. It is a media line and will not log a customer case.
- Complaining about a licensed store to Starbucks head office without naming the site. It gets forwarded and you lose a week.
- Binning the receipt. Without a transaction reference, refunds take far longer to verify.
- Waiting weeks. Till records and mobile order data are much easier to retrieve within a few days.
- Opening a second case instead of replying to the first. It resets your position in the queue.
- Complaining to Starbucks about a delivery order. Refunds for Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Just Eat orders are handled by the platform, not the store.

The short version: fix it at the counter if you can, use the web form with hard details if you cannot, and never assume the branded shop in front of you is run by the company whose logo is on the cup. Most clients use their own names. Additionally, we strive to honor a customer’s choice to order their drink in our café under a different name, such as Charlie Kirk. There have been times over the years when someone has attempted to exploit the system.
It truly relies on the availability of your partners and store management. Several partners work four-hour shifts at my business.
Reversing its open-door policy, Starbucks now requires customers to make a purchase in order to remain. After nearly seven years of an open-door policy, Starbucks is now requiring customers to make a purchase to use its facilities or hang out in its coffee shops.
We think that sharing is the greatest way to achieve success. Because every one of us has a stake in the company’s future success, our employees are referred to as partners through our annual Bean Stock grant.
